PURPOSE:To maximize the efficiency in generating gaseous methane by performing the operation for sludge treatment to maximize the rate of generating methane from a digestion tank in accordance with the instruction from a computer by using the concn. of the sludge charged into the digestion tank and the concn. of the sludge discharged from a solid-liquid sepn. tank as input values. CONSTITUTION:The concn. of the sludge flowing through a sludge feed pipe 1 into a digestion tank 2 is measured by a detector 9. On the other hand, the concn. of the sludge discharged therefrom is also measured with a detector 14. Both concn. signals are fed to a circuit 21 for calculating the flow rate of sludge. The flow rate of the sludge to be charged, the flow rate of the discharged sludge and the flow rate of the circulating sludge which maximize the rate of generating methane are calculated by using the numerical model of a digestion stage in the circuit 21 and the set values thereof are applied to controllers 17, 18, 20. The rate of generating methane is thus maintained at the max. rate under the operating conditions. On the other hand, the signals detecting the flow rate and concn. of the sludge to be charged and the flow rate, concn. etc. of the discharged sludge are fed to a model correcting circuit 16.
