PURPOSE: A backlight unit and a display device using the same are provided to supply light to a display panel through a module-type backlight unit, thereby reducing the thickness of the display device. CONSTITUTION: Optical assemblies(10) of a backlight unit(100) are arranged in a matrix shape in x and y axis directions. Each optical assembly includes a light source(13) and a light guide plate(15). The light source is adjacent to the bottom part of the light guide plate. Each optical assembly operates by an edge type backlight mode. Each optical assembly operates as one light source again. The optical assemblies are arranged in a direct type backlight mode.
