PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide ophthalmic compositions containing three polymers. SOLUTION: There are provided ophthalmic compositions suitable for use as artificial tears, or ophthalmic compositions suitable for use as vehicles for ophthalmic drugs. The compositions include a combination of three polymers that have a synergistic effect on viscosity. The three polymers are hydroxypropylmethylcellulose, and a combination of two polymers. The combination of the two polymers is selected from the group of combinations consisting of guar gum, and a carboxyvinyl polymer; guar gum, and a hydroxyethylcellulose; guar gum, and dextran; hydroxyethylcellulose, and carboxyvinyl polymer; and dextran, and carboxyvinyl polymer.
