An intermediate for fungicides has formula (1), where X is halogen, NO2 or 1-3C haloalkyl; n is 0, 1 or 2; Y is H or halogen. Fungicides of formula (2), where X, Y and n have the above meanings, are suitably produced by reacting (1) with NH3 or aq. NH3 in an organic solvent, such as EtOH, dioxane, at 30 deg.C to the B. pt. of the reaction mixt. for 3-5 hr. and purifying the product by column chromatography. Cpds. (1) can also be used as fungicide; cpds. (2) can be produced more simply and under milder conditions than previously.
