PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable information terminal capable of controlling many devices to be controlled. SOLUTION: The portable information terminal is provided with: a first communication section which transmits information specifying the device to be controlled to an external server, and acquires software for control of the device to be controlled from the external server; a control section which executes a program of the received software for control; a second communication section which transmits a control instruction to the device to be controlled; and a reading section which reads information unique to the device to be controlled, uses the information unique to the device to be controlled incorporated from the reading section to acquire a connection destination of the external server, and a program for control of the device to be controlled via the first communication section, executes a download program, and uses the second communication section which performs information communication between the portable information terminal and the household appliance to control the household appliance.
