PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas diffusion electrode enabling a high-current density operation of a fuel cell.

SOLUTION: The gas diffusion electrode is provided with a hydrophilic porous layer having a conductive material and an ion conductive material and a catalyst layer adjoining the hydrophilic porous layer, and the water-transport resistance of the hydrophilic porous layer is smaller than the water-transport resistance of the catalyst layer.
