PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compound having a larger absolute value ofΔεin compounds having the negativeΔε, exhibiting excellent compatibility with another liquid crystal material and high liquid crystallinity, and having a low viscosity, and to provide a practicable liquid crystal composition using the compound. SOLUTION: The difluorobenzene derivative represented by formula (I) is suitable as a component of the practicable liquid crystal composition drivable at a low voltage, because the derivative has negative dielectric anisotropy having an extremely large absolute value, exhibits an extremely low viscosity, is chemically stable to heat, light, water or the like, and has excellent compatibility with a liquid crystal compound or a liquid crystal composition commonly used now. The liquid crystal composition using the compound is useful as a constituent member of a liquid crystal display element driven by the low voltage and having low power consumption, and is suitably used for the liquid crystal display element in a VA type, an IPS type and the like.
