PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a friction welding method which ensures stable healing pressurization and upset pressurization and facilitates phase matching between workpieces. SOLUTION: This invention relates to the method of friction welding two workpieces W<SB>1</SB>, W<SB>2</SB>. The method includes: a step in which one workpiece W<SB>1</SB>is chucked to a main shaft L rotatably driven controlled while the other workpiece W<SB>2</SB>is chucked to the other opposing main shaft R or a clamp device R in a manner that the joining faces are opposed to each other, and by rotating the main shaft L, the joining face of the workpiece W<SB>1</SB>is rotated while being brought into frictional heat generating contact with the joining face of the workpiece W<SB>2</SB>, and the opposing main shaft R or the clamp device R is movably controlled so as to reach a target coordinate of the healing pressurization in the Z axis direction; and a step in which the main shaft R or the clamp device R is movably controlled so as to reach the target coordinate of the upset pressurization.
