PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water jet peening (WJP) method confirming more accurately the effect of improvement in the residual stress of a workpiece to be sujected to WJP. SOLUTION: A nozzle is moved to a scanning starting position in a welded part of a component member, and high-pressure water jet is injected from the nozzle to a WJP workpiece execution by driving a high-pressure pump. The nozzle is moved along the welded part while the water jet is injected (S8). A shock wave generated due to the burst of bubbles included in the injected water jet is collided with the workpiece, and the residual stress is improved. The shock wave is detected by an AE sensor. A generation position of the shock wave is calculated based on a detection signal of the AE sensor, and a shock wave generation frequency is obtained in each position vertically set on the surface of the component member by using the obtained generation position of each shock wave (S9). When the effect of improvement in the residual stress is confirmed based on the shock wave generation frequency (S11), the high-pressure pump is stopped (S14). COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT
