The present invention relates to a method for operating an operator control device, particularly in a vehicle, wherein the operator control device comprises an operating element having an operating interface (4), wherein a detection region (8) is formed for the method, said region being divided into a plurality of detection zones (8-1 to 8-n), and the duration of the presence of an actuating element (9) in the individual detection zones (8-1 to 8-n) is determined. The method according to the invention is characterized in that the detection zones (8-1 to 8-n) are disposed so that when the actuating element is actuated in a direction parallel to the operating interface (4), the actuating element (9) changes from one detection zone (8-1 to 8-n) into a different detection zone, and a signal for an operating intention of a user is generated when the duration of the presence of the actuating element (9) in a detection zone (8-1 to 8-n) exceeds a threshold value. The invention further relates to an operating device by means of which the above method can be performed.
