PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress irregularities in image recording on a display medium, due to an influence of unevenness of film thickness which is caused during manufacturing of the display medium. SOLUTION: An electronic paper 200 includes an intervening layer 280 provided between a liquid crystal layer 250 and a transparent electrode 260 and has areas where the intervening layer 280 having a lower dielectric constant than the liquid crystal layer 250 exists and areas where the intervening layer 280 doesn't exist, so that the intensity of an electric field generated in the liquid crystal layer 250 is different between areas where the intervening layer 280 exists and the other areas. Consequently, an alignment state of the liquid crystal layer 250 is different based on areas when a specific voltage is applied between transparent electrodes 220 and 260, whereby control of a gray level is facilitated.
