PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means using a pair of optical sensors for detecting a remaining sheet amount and a sheet width on a sheet placing part. SOLUTION: The light emitting element 67 is disposed on a paper feeding means which moves in a first direction 121 in accordance with the thickness of the sheets placed in the paper feed tray 20, and light emitted from the light emitting element 67 and transmitted toward a carriage 38 through a gap between light shielding lines is received by the light receiving element 68 mounted on the carriage 38, then, the second position P2 of the carriage is detected by a position detecting means. The remaining sheet amount in the paper feed tray 20 is detected based on the second position P2. Besides, the light emitted from the light emitting element 67 and transmitted through a light transmission part 52 is received by the light receiving element 68 mounted on the carriage 38, and the fourth position P4 of the carriage is detected by the position detecting means.
