PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an expiration date reading device for detecting inclination of a character string showing an expiration date on a commodity, at a high speed. SOLUTION: The expiration date reading device 20 is provided with an inclination detection processing unit 33 for detecting inclination of the character string showing the expiration date in an input image, using Hough transformation, and reads expiration date information indicated by the expiration date. The inclination detection processing unit 33 includes: a first inclination angle deciding unit 331 for deciding a first inclination angle by performing calculation for each predetermined angle resolution while changing the angle within a preset first detection angle range with respect to a feature point of the image; and a second inclination angle deciding unit 332 for deciding a second inclination angle by performing calculation for each angle resolution higher than the angle resolution in the first inclination angle deciding unit 331 with respect to the feature point of the image, while changing the angle within a second detection angle range which is narrower than the first detection angle range, around the first inclination angle to be a center.
