PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electro-optical device which has excellent moisture-proof performance by preventing a substrate from being cracked, and to provide a manufacturing method thereof. SOLUTION: The electrophoretic display device 1 includes an electro-optical panel 10 holding an electrophoretic layer 31 between an element substrate 2 and a surface protection substrate 4, and also includes a first sealant 61 which is disposed between the pair of substrates 2 and 4 so as to surround the electrophoretic layer 31 and seals up the electrophoretic layer 31 between the substrates 2 and 4, and a second sealing layer 62 formed to cover at least a part of a side wall surface of the first sealant 61.
