PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a microscope which is usable as an upright microscope, and also, as an inverted microscope. SOLUTION: The microscope 1 includes: a base 10; and a turntable 20 supported by the base 10. The microscope 1 also includes: a lens barrel part 30 supported by the turntable 20; a sample stage 40 supported by the turntable 20 under the lens barrel part 30; and a pattern illumination 50 supported by the turntable 20 via the sample stage 40 under the sample stage 40. The microscope 1 is configured to take an upright position in which the lens barrel part 30 is positioned above the sample stage 40 and an inverted position in which the lens barrel part 30 is positioned under the sample stage 40 by rotating the turntable 20 with respect to the base 10.
