The present invention relates to a device for shearing or shredding and crushing materials to be crushed, essentially consisting of a shearing or shredding means (2) and a crusher (3) having a rotor (4) arranged below said shearing or shredding means (2) and communicating with the latter via a transverse opening (5). The device is characterised in that it is compact and in that the longitudinal axis of the crusher (3) having the rotor (4) is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the shearing or shredding means (2), with which the crusher (3) having the rotor (4) communicates directly via the transverse opening (5) thereof, the effective diameter of the rotor (4) of the crusher (3) being substantially equal to the length of the shearing or shredding means (2), and in that the crusher (3) having the rotor (4) is a crusher with a horizontal longitudinal axis or a crusher with a longitudinal axis that is angled relative to the horizontal. The invention can be used specifically in the field of treating materials of any origin, in particular by first shearing or shredding, and then by crushing.
