<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent occurrence of chipping at the dividing part of a face on which a break bar abuts when a brittle material substrate having a scribe line is broken along the scribe line by using the break bar. <P>SOLUTION: A couple of break edges 15, 16 each having a linear edge part are provided at the upper end of a break bar 10, and elastic members 12, 13 are provided on the sides of the break bar 10. When the break bar 10 is projected to a brittle material substrate having a scribe line, the elastic members 12, 13 are deformed, two edge parts of the break edges serve as supporting points, and the brittle material substrate is divided without mutual pressing of parts just below the scribe line.
