PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus speedily detecting an abnormality in a document feeding state. SOLUTION: When a distal end portion of a document reaches the center of a determination area in a readable area during implementation of scan dependent upon automatic document feeding, a scanner temporarily stops feeding the document. The scanner moves a CIS 23 to a point corresponding to a most upstream position in a document feeding direction in the determination area and implements scan while moving the CIS 23 to a point corresponding to a most downstream position in the determination area. It is then determined based on image data produced by scan whether double document feeding or inclination occurs, and an abnormality in a document feeding state is detected.
