The device has multiple protection elements (1) and a reading device (3) for reading the character, where each protection element is assigned to the character. A computer (4) compares the read character with reference value data. A switch (5) is activated by the reference value data during deviation of the read character, and interrupts a drive of a shaft (7). A transponder (2) and reading device are based on the Radio frequency identificationtechnology. An independent claim is also included for a method for protection against contact of a driven shaft.
