Textile materials are bleached in a hot chlorite solution which contains at least one ester of an organic acid which is not oxidized under the conditions obtaining, the solution being free from acids, acid salts or compounds giving acids on oxidation. Simple, complex or internal esters of aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic mono- or di-carboxylic acids may be used. Ethyl acetate, glycol and glycerol formates and acetates, ethyl tartrate and lactate, ethyl and butyl phthalates and gamma-butyrolactone are specified. The pH of the bath may be initially between 6 and 8 and the temperature may be between 40 and 150 DEG C. Non-acid anti-rust or anti-corrosion substances such as nitrates or fluorides may be added. The materials treated may be of polyacrylonitrile, polyamide, cellulose acetate, polyvinyl chloride, glycol polyterephthalate or cotton fibres. The chlorite may be of an alkali or alkaline earth metal. Sodium and potassium chlorites are mentioned. |
