The vehicle has a manual transmission i.e. double clutch manual transmission, with a switching operating mode for automatic switching between a forward gear and a reverse gear. A distance determination unit determines distance of a motor vehicle to an object in an environment before the vehicle and another distance to another object in an environment behind the vehicle. A control unit automatically interrupts the switching operating mode depending on the distances. The forward and rear gears are inserted in two partial manual transmissions of the double clutch manual transmission. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a motor vehicle.
