LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY DEVICE

Disclosed is a liquid crystal display device including liquid crystal molecules of which response characteristics are improved. Specifically disclosed is a liquid crystal display device which comprises a pair of substrates opposing each other and a liquid crystal layer held between the pair of substrates. The liquid crystal layer contains liquid crystal molecules having positive dielectric anisotropy, and the liquid crystal molecules are oriented perpendicular to surfaces of the pair of substrates while no voltage is applied thereto. The pair of substrates is provided with two or more comb-shaped electrode pairs of which comb tooth portions alternately engage with each other with a regular spacing interposed therebetween. One of the pair of substrates is provided with a first polarizing plate, and the other is provided with a second polarizing plate. The long axis of the comb tooth portions of a first comb-shaped electrode pair among the two or more comb-shaped electrode pairs and the transmission axis of the first polarizing plate form an angle of about 45°. The long axis of the comb tooth portions of a second comb-shaped electrode pair among the two or more comb-shaped electrode pairs and the transmission axis of the second polarizing plate are parallel to or orthogonal to each other. The transmission axis of the first polarizing plate and that of the second polarizing plate are orthogonal to each other. The first comb-shaped electrode pair and the second comb-shaped electrode pair overlap with each other when viewed in the direction normal to the surfaces of the pair of substrates.
