PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce influence of the disturbance light, in an optical sensor having a light receiving part used in a paper sheet carrying device. SOLUTION: This paper sheet carrying device has a carrying pipe 14 for carrying a bill 18 by an air flow and an input device 19 for sending the bill 18 into the carrying pipe 14. A reflection type optical sensor 31B for detecting the bill 18 in the carrying pipe 14 is arranged on the wall surface side of the carrying pipe 14. The reflection type optical sensor 31B comprises a light emitting part 31b and the light receiving part 31a, and detects the light from the light emitting part 31b by the light receiving part 31a, and is initially set so that output of the light receiving part 31a of detecting the light from the light emitting part 31b in a state of not detecting the bill 18, falls within a specified value range, and performs parallel processing on detection processing for detecting the bill 18 by the reflection type optical sensor 31B and correction processing for correcting the output of the light receiving part 31a detected in a state of not detecting the bill 18, within the specified value range, by adjusting a light quantity of the light emitting part 31b.
