The sensor has a multi-functional receiving unit comprising a lens (106), where a multi-channel transmission unit and the lens rotate around a common axis. The sensor scans different surfaces or scenes around a vehicle at different angles, different power densities and at different rotation angle ranges, during rotation of the multi-channel transmission unit and the lens, where the scanning is modified as a function of an angle, driving direction and speed of a vehicle to detect a surrounding area of the vehicle.
