The source (20) has a hollow cathode (12) i.e. tubular annular cathode, defining an inner diameter of the source. A choke-filter (16) is integrated in a structure of a cathode holder (14). The cathode together with the holder and the choke-filter is cooled to a temperature level of liquid nitrogen. The holder mechanically contacts an outer region (22) of the cathode such that the outer region includes a distance (A) to an end (24) of the cathode, where the end faces towards a resonator. The distance is larger than an inner diameter of the cathode at a minimal point.
