The method involves illuminating a storage container (1) by a line laser (7), where light beam (12) emitted by the line laser is directed to the storage container in an inspection phase. Lines are generated on a closure (3) of a vessel (2) of the storage container and/or on an upper edge of walls of the storage container by the line laser. Characteristics of the vessel in the storage container are inspected, such that the number and/or a position of the lines falling in an image aperture of an image sensor (8) are evaluated. An independent claim is also included for a device for inspecting a storage container.
