A nanoparticle or a method for producing a nanoparticle with a core comprising a core semiconductor material, a first layer comprising a first semiconductor material on the core and a second layer comprising a second semiconductor material on the first layer wherein the core is formed by conversion of a core precursor composition comprising separate first and second core precursor species and the conversion is effected in the presence of a molecular cluster compound acting as a seed or nucleation point for nanoparticle growth. The core material is different to the first semiconductor material which is different to the second semiconductor material. The second semiconductor material comprises ions of at least two different elements from group 12 and ions from group 16 e.g. ZnS/CdSe/CdxZn1-xS. The molecular cluster and core precursor composition may be dispersed in a dispersing solution and the temperature may be increased to initiate seeding of the core. The first and second layers may be formed from single-source or multi-source precursors. Further layers may be provided on the second layer. The nanoparticle may form a light emitting quantum dot quantum well (QDQW). |
