PURPOSE: A 3-axis robot and a gantry-type machining system using the same are provided to prevent a failure by preventing the minute chips and dust produced during welding and cutting from being piled up in an intermediate frame. CONSTITUTION: A gantry-type machining system comprises a 3-axis robot(10), a gantry member(20), and Z-, R-, and &thgr;-axis motors. The 3-axis robot is equipped with a welding device or a cutting device and moved to a working position by the gantry member. The gantry member includes a longitudinal guide rail, a transverse guide rail, a vertical guide rail, and a gantry driving unit for providing the 3-axis robot with a drive force to move along the guide rails. When the 3-axis robot reaches a working position, the Z-, R-, and &thgr;-axis motors are respectively controlled to keep the tool rest of the 3-axis robot at the proper angle and position.
