A system comprises cassettes (2, 201), with a magnetic tape on two reels in a housing (202) having two plane-parallel main walls (203, 20) interconnected by transverse walls, of which one transverse wall constitutes a cassette front wall (205), and apparatuses (1) constructed to cooperate with these cassettes. The cassettes have a shutter (212) which is slidable between an open position and a closed position and which comprises imperforate portions (217, 220, 221) and cover portions (222, 223) for covering openings (206, 207, 208, 209, 210) in the cassette in the closed position, and which is also formed with openings (218, 219, 225, 226) for exposing the openings in the cassette in the open position. The apparatus comprises urging means (30) for moving the shutter and sensing means (32) adapted to cooperate with cassettes (18) of a second type, for disabling the urging means. (Figs. 1 and 9).
