Process for the decarboxylation of alpha-substituted phenylacetic acids by a nitro, cyano, carboxyl, carboxyamide, carboxyester, sulphonic or phosphonic group, which comprises reaction between the acid and a bicyclic amidine such as 1,8-diazobicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7- ene or 1,5-diazabicyclo[4.3.0]non-5-ene in a chlorinated hydrocarbon, preferably at a temperature from -30 to 50 degree C. Of application for the synthesis of intermediates for the chemical and pharmaceutical industry.
