A method for managing down-hole data comprising a drill string 12 with a plurality of tools 10, transmitting data from those tools to a linking tool, in the drill string, which converts between a protocol associated with the data and a protocol associated with a network 200 and transmits the data to that network through a telemetry system 100. The linking tool may convert form a first protocol to a TCP/IP format allowing access to the data by a terminal in a remote location 211, 212 and 213. Preferably the data is transmitted to the network through a wired drill pipe system 210 connected to the linking tool.A method of using data relating to a down-hole tool 10 comprising obtaining data relating to a down-hole tool, providing a network 200 in communication with the tool and determining whether to transmit the data to the network without instruction from the network. A system comprising a database 229 storing data, located up-hole from the wellbore, and a tool in the wellbore, the tool automatically requests information from the database and automatically performs an action based on the data.
