PURPOSE:To enhance fracture toughness by incorporating free carbon and NbB2 and/or CrB2 into SiC as a matrix and allowing the SiC, free carbon and borides to form a three-phase combined body. CONSTITUTION:SiC powder as a base is blended with 2-20vol.% free carbon powder of <=50mum average particle size and 5-30vol.% NbB2 powder and/or CrB2 powder, a sintering aid and a binder are added to the blend and they are mixed, dried and pulverized. The resulting powdery mixture is molded and sintered by heating in vacuum to afford an SiC-based sliding material having enhanced fracture toughness. |
