Spectrum-sensing algorithms and methods

The method involves receiving an input spectrum with a set of channels, and performing a coarse scan of the channels to determine occupied candidate channels and vacant candidate channels, where the scan is related to a resolution bandwidth and a frequency sweep increment. A fine scan of the channels is performed to determine actually occupied channels and actually vacant channels, where the fine scan is related to another resolution bandwidth and another increment. An indication of the actually occupied and vacant channels is stored. An independent claim is also included for a spectrum-sensing system comprising an input radio frequency.
