<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform steady belt drive control for a long period of time by preventing an object to be detected from being soiled, wearing, or peeling with time, without shortening the service life of an apparatus nor increasing the size and cost of the apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: The belt drive device rotates a transfer conveyance belt 60 stretched over a plurality of rollers, by driving at least one of the rollers. An bias-stop guide 104 disposed at the end of the internal circumferential face of the transfer conveyance belt is made a multilayer structure having a surface layer 102 and a lower layer 101 whose hardness is higher than that of the surface layer 102 and fixed to the transfer conveyance belt. A marking member 103 is disposed in the multilayer of the bias-stop guide. The marking member is detected by a photo-sensor 105.
