The method involves determining an exhaust gas mass flow value that is compared with another exhaust gas mass flow value. The latter exhaust gas mass flow value is determined depending on a determined exhaust gas lambda value. A control variable determined by the former exhaust gas mass flow value is corrected for controlling an operation of an internal-combustion engine i.e. diesel engine (1), when the former exhaust gas mass flow value deviates from a predetermined measure of the latter exhaust mass flow value.
