PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an HCCI (Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition) gasoline engine that achieves slow combustion where a pressure increasing rate after ignition is low and combustion where generation of nitrogen dioxide is suppressed, by providing a temperature distribution in a cylinder and making a fuel concentration uniform, thereby expanding an HCCI drivable range. SOLUTION: A layer forming mechanism 70 for forming a low-temperature gas layer T2 mainly containing fresh air and a high-temperature gas layer T1 mainly containing an EGR gas so as to be layered is provided within a cylinder 1a. The properties and arrangement structure of an in-cylinder fuel injection valve 24 is set so that an injected fuel reaches the high-temperature gas layer T1 after passing through the low-temperature gas layer T2.
