The knee restraint is mounted under the dashboard of the passenger side, or the driver's position, and does not impede access to that seat. The integral gas generator (11) is fitted onto the mounting plate, while a folded airbag (21) is held in the cover. The support has thin sides of corrugated metal, which are extended by the gas before the airbag is inflated. The airbag is inflated via holes (19) of controlled size in the outer plate (15) of the support, and under the folded airbag. When the peak pressure has passed, air leaks out of the airbag, leaving the extended support over the knees. USE/ADVANTAGE - Knee restraint airbag in vehicle prevents seat occupant sliding under dashboard, and has compact mounting.
