The water is passed in an enclosed system through an optional neutral granular material, for example a layer of quartz gravel (6), and then through granular dechlorination and neutralising substances (A) and (B), the dechlorinating substance (A) being calcium sulphite. Also claimed is a device for carrying out the procedure, consisting of a container (2), with an inlet (3) and an outlet (4), in which the treatment is effected. More than one substance (B) may be used in the form of a mixture or in separate layers. Neutralising substances (B) may consist of calcium carbonate (8), magnesium hydroxide and magnesium oxide, as separate materials or in combinations. The container may have one or more chambers for receiving the neutral material and the treatment substances (A,B). The water may pass through these chambers in series or in parallel, and may flow from one chamber to another either in an upward or a downward direction, or both. Substances (A) and (B) may be separated by layers (11) of a neutral material such as quartz gravel. The ratio of the mass of substance (A) to that of substance (B) is 1:1 to 1:6, whether they exist as separate layers or as a mixture. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used for dechlorinating and neutralising chlorine-contg., acidic water and esp. water which has been used in sprinkler systems for dealing with escapes of chlorine gas. The procedure uses stable chemical substances and can be operated by relatively unskilled personnel. It is therefore reliable, simple and economical to implement.
