PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a periodic magnetic field generation device in which a generated field is further increased and sinusoidalized by changing the shapes of soft magnetic materials or the shapes of main pole permanent magnets and auxiliary pole permanents magnet in the periodic magnetic field generation device having a Halbach magnet array, and to provide a linear motor and a rotary motor using the periodic magnetic field generation device. SOLUTION: In the periodic magnetic field generation device, a relation between the length A of the soft magnetic materials 104 on the side of the generated field in a moving direction and the length B of the main pole permanent magnets 111 on the side of a back yoke 103 in the moving direction is so formed as to be A<B. The length A on the side of the generated field in the moving direction and the length B on the side of the back yoke 103 in the moving direction in the soft magnetic materials 104 are made equal, and the length A on the side of the generated field in the moving direction and the length B on the side of the back yoke in the moving direction in the main pole permanent magnets 111 are made equal.
