The invention relates to a system for locating motor vehicles by recording the passage of the vehicle past fixed points located in urban roads. The system comprises sensing devices (2) and identifying devices (3) that communicate over a wireless, short distance communication means (5), and a central unit (1) that communicates with the sensing devices (2) over a trusted, wire-based or wireless communication means (4). The central unit (1) receives and records vehicle passage information sent by the sensing devices (2). When the central unit (1) is requested to supply the location of a particular monitored vehicle (8), it searches for the record of the most recent vehicle location, derived from the most recent passage of the vehicle past one of the sensing devices (2), the most recent date and time corresponding to the identification tag in the identifying device (3) on the vehicle, and the location of the fixed point corresponding to the location code of the sensing device (2).
