PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a plate compactor which has a simple constitution, which can singly perform compaction of a base course etc. by applying rolling compaction to a civil engineering material, laid on a laying surface, as in the case of a conventional plate compactor, and which facilitates surface finish. SOLUTION: This plate compactor vibrates a vibrating plate by a vibration exciter, and applies the rolling compaction to the civil engineering material, laid on the laying surface, by using this vibration. Characteristically, the plate compactor includes a vibration control means for the vibrating plate, which comprises a weight, an elastic member for supporting the weight in such a manner that it can be vertically vibrated with respect to the vibrating plate by expansion/contraction, and a weight fixing means for enabling the selection of either of the state of fixing the weight to the vibrating plate and the state of making the weight vibratable in a vertical direction with respect to the vibrating plate.
