A gripping apparatus (2) for gripping an object (4) comprises a body (6) having a central axis (5), and a plurality of gripping devices (12) arranged circumferentially around the central axis (5) of the body (6), wherein at least one of the gripping devices (12) is adapted to pivot relative to the body (6) to permit the gripping apparatus to comply with the geometry of the object (4) being gripped. In one embodiment the apparatus (2) comprises a gripping element (14) pivotally mounted on a gripping device (12).
