The method involves controlling switching-on and off process of three battery units (2) by a controlling unit (4). The battery units are switched-on and off depending on operating characteristics of the battery units. Charging condition and battery temperature of the battery units is utilized as the operating characteristic for selecting the switching on process of the battery units. The battery units are provided with a system voltage of about 400 volts, where each battery unit is provided with an isolating contactor (5). An independent claim is also included for a battery system comprising battery units.
