PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a base isolation device that affords a base isolation effect against large-magnitude quakes. SOLUTION: This base isolation device includes a base isolation unit which comprises an upper member that can be fixed to an upper structure, a lower member that can be fixed to a foundation member, and a sliding member slidably held between the upper member and the lower member. The abutting surface of the upper member on the sliding member and the abutting surface of the lower member on the sliding member are form recessed surfaces, respectively. The sliding member comprises a convex upper surface in contact with the upper member, a convex lower surface in contact with the lower member, and a circular side-part between the upper surface and the lower surface. A recess is present in all or a part of the side part of the sliding member in the circumferential direction. The convex upper and lower surfaces of the sliding members are formed of a plurality of flat surfaces from the top parts to the peripheral edge parts of the upper and lower surfaces, respectively.
