METHOD OF DEHYDRATION CONDENSATION IN WATER AND CATALYST USABLE FOR THE METHOD

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of dehydration condensation in water, for efficiently collecting a small amount of an organic compound contained in water (e.g. acetic acid) by converting the organic compound into a hydrophobic material by the dehydration condensation, and to provide a catalyst usable for the method and causing a very small amount of elution thereof into a water layer.

SOLUTION: The dehydration condensation is carried out in water by using an organic basic compound and a Broensted acid having a surfactant structure as a catalyst. Specifically, a carboxylic acid in the water and a hydrophobic alcohol are converted into a hydrophobic ester by using the catalyst, and the ester is collected from the aqueous phase to an organic phase (hydrophobic alcohol phase).
