PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sliding member and a surface treating method therefor which assure a high reliability by reducing a friction loss and/or wear even in the case of application under severer sliding conditions, as improvement of a conventional arrangement in which the sliding surfaces in between can not retain a sufficient quantity of lubricating oil and coagulation and/or abrasive wear propagate if such a sliding condition in the boundary lubricating region that the oil film is broken to cause the sliding members to contact with each other, lasts for a long period of time, which may finally result in a lock due to seizure or an abnormal wear.

SOLUTION: The proportion of the openings of the recesses 136 formed in the whole area or any arbitrary region(s) of the sliding surface 138 to the total area is set properly according to the sliding conditions, instead of simply forming a number of recesses 136 on the surface of each sliding member 132. Recesses 136 and flat portions free of recesses 136 are provided in mixture on the sliding surface 138 in the prescribed proportion.
