PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic document carrying device capable of accurately determining the existence of a document. SOLUTION: This automatic document carrying device 152 includes a document tray 252, a document existence sensor 253 for detecting the existence of the document on the document tray 252, a document size information sensor for detecting size information on the document on the document tray 252, a start key for accepting a reading starting request of a document image, and a control part. The control part determines whether or not to be a document existence state based on a detecting result of the document existence sensor 253 and the document size information sensor by responding to the fact that the start key accepts the request, and performs carrying of the document when determines as being the document existence state. The control part determines as being high in the possibility of becoming the document existence state when the document size information sensor detects the size information on the document when determines as being not the document existence state.
