PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To adopt a default mechanism with high durability and reliability in a lift-variable valve gear of an internal combustion engine comprising a lift-variable mechanism capable of changing the lift amounts of engine valves according to the rotation of a control shaft and an actuator having a drive shaft interlocked with the control shaft and an electric motor developing a power rotatingly driving the drive shaft to rotate it one turn or more within the range of the change of the lift amount of the engine valves. SOLUTION: The actuator 60 comprises at least a major part of the default mechanism 65 having a default shaft 96 formed separately from the drive shaft 67 and having an axis parallel with the drive shaft 67, a rotating member 92 rotatable around the axis of the default shaft 96 and interlocked with the drive shaft, and a default spring 95 rotatingly energizing the rotating member 92.
