A portable sudden flood detection unit is provided comprising a top section 1; a protruding nose section 3; and a bottom section 2. The bottom section 2 comprises a removable post for affixing the device into the ground. The bottom section 2 is screwed into the top section 1 to make the whole device watertight. The top section 1 houses electronics including LED lights, a speaker, a flood detection sensor, a battery, and a circuit board. The top section 1 may further include emergency supplies. The flood detection sensor is arranged to detect a rising flood (1,fig.6) via the protruding nose section 3 and in response activates the LED lights (2,fig.6) and speaker (3,fig.6) to alert a user. The user may subsequently retrieve the device from the ground and use the included emergency supplies to aid survival.
