Process for the preparation of 2,2'-(1-methyl-1,2-ethanediylidine)bis[hydrazine carboximidamine] by a) removing impurities from aminoguanidine bicarbonate; b) reacting the aminoguanidine bicarbonate with methylglyoxal dimethylacetal in an aqueous isopropyl medium; and c) purifying the 2,2'-(1-methyl-1,2-ethanediylidene)bis[hydrazine carboximidamide] by crystallization from an acidic aqueous-isopropanol medium.
